Queijo de Cabra Transmontano ranked best goat cheese in Europe

Queijo de Cabra Transmontano, a traditional goat cheese from Portugal’s Trás-os-Montes region, has been ranked as the best goat cheese in Europe by the food platform TasteAtlas. The cheese secured the top position with a rating of 4.4 out of 5, placing it ahead of Greece’s Sfela and France’s Crottin de Chavignol.

Produced in the Bragança and Vila Real districts, the cheese is made from the raw milk of native Serrana goats. It is characterized by its round shape, semi-hard rind, and firm white interior with an intense, slightly spicy flavor. The production is largely artisanal, with the Leicras cooperative in Mirandela serving as a primary producer. The cheese is available in two versions: a standard two-month cured variety and a “velho” version cured for three months, sometimes rubbed with olive oil and paprika.

The TasteAtlas ranking is based on user evaluations, utilizing specific mechanisms to filter out artificial or purely patriotic votes to prioritize assessments from recognized connoisseurs.
