Queilen historic chapel destroyed by fire

A fire completely destroyed the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria chapel in Agoní Bajo, located near Queilen in the Chiloé Archipelago, Chile. The historic structure, built with native woods such as tepa, luma, and alerce, was considered a significant piece of local religious heritage. While the current building dated back to approximately 1900, historical records indicate a chapel had existed on the site since 1730.

The blaze began around 3:00 PM on November 1, a day when many visitors were present at the nearby cemetery for All Saints Day. Firefighters from Queilen and Chonchi responded to the emergency, but the rapid spread of the flames meant the wooden structure was consumed within approximately 20 minutes. The fire reportedly destroyed the chapel's 16.5-meter bell tower and the venerated image of the Virgin of Candelaria.

Preliminary estimates suggest the fire may have started near the altar, possibly due to a candle lit by visitors, though technical experts will conduct investigations to establish the official cause. Local officials, including Mayor Marcos Vargas and Bishop Juan María Agurto of the Diocese of San Carlos de Ancud, expressed profound sadness over the loss of the cultural and historical landmark.
