Queimados: 8-year-old girl shot during police confrontation

An 8-year-old girl was shot in the leg during a police operation in the São Simão community in Queimados, located in the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when armed criminals opened fire on Military Police teams patrolling the area. The suspects fled into a wooded area following the confrontation.

The child was treated at a local health unit and was discharged early Thursday morning. During the police action, authorities seized various quantities of drugs, including crack cocaine, cocaine, and marijuana. The Civil Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the shooting. According to the Instituto Fogo Cruzado, this incident marks the ninth time a child between the ages of 0 and 11 has been shot in the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region in 2026, with three fatalities and six injuries reported so far.
