Quercus opposes Galp wind farm project in Odemira and Ourique

The environmental association Quercus has issued an unfavorable opinion regarding Galp’s proposed Mira Wind Farm project in the Odemira and Ourique municipalities of the Alentejo region. The project, which aims to hybridize an existing photovoltaic plant, involves the installation of up to 22 large-scale wind turbines with an estimated capacity of 158 MW.

Quercus argues that the project is incompatible with local territorial management instruments. Specifically, the association claims that several turbines are planned for rustic soil in Ourique where renewable energy projects are currently prohibited due to preventive measures and the partial suspension of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM). The project also reportedly overlaps with areas under the National Agricultural Reserve (RAN) and the National Ecological Reserve (REN).

Environmental concerns raised by the association include potential impacts on birds, bats, and sensitive habitats. The proposed site is located near several protected areas, including the Special Protection Zones (ZPE) of Castro Verde and Piçarras, and the Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) of the Southwest Coast. Additionally, Quercus noted that the construction of access roads and support platforms would require the cutting of protected tree species, such as cork oaks and holm oaks.
