Quercus urges APA firmness over Grândola beach access dispute
The environmental association Quercus is calling for a firm stance from the Portuguese government and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) regarding a dispute over beach access in Grândola.
Quercus has condemned what it describes as “intimidation strategies” by the tourism developer Coporgest, the owner of the Comporta Beach & Golf Resort project. According to the association, Coporgest has threatened to file an injunction against the APA to block the revision of the Espichel-Odeceixe Coastal Program (POC).
The dispute centers on the planned construction of 250 new parking spaces near the only public entrance to the Camarinhas and Duna Cinzenta beaches. Quercus argues that these spaces are essential for public access, noting that currently, only a single path along National Road 253 is available for pedestrians and emergency vehicles, with no parking available for those not staying at local luxury resorts.
The association characterized the situation as an attempt to appropriate public goods and an attack on the Portuguese coastline by luxury real estate interests.
