Querétaro Attorney General links animal cruelty prosecutor to budget approval

The Attorney General of Querétaro, Víctor de Jesús Hernández, stated that the creation of a specialized prosecutor's office to address animal cruelty depends on local legislators and budget approval.

While the current 2026 fiscal budget does not include provisions for the construction or operation of a dedicated unit, Hernández noted that the existing office currently handles investigations related to animal crimes. He indicated that while current resources are sufficient to meet demands, additional funding would allow for improved training, infrastructure, and specialized personnel.

The proposal follows protests and marches by activists in Querétaro's historic center demanding a specialized structure to better serve citizen requests regarding animal welfare.
