Mexico announces new highway project to alleviate Mexico-Querétaro traffic

The Mexican government, through the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT), has announced a new 81-kilometer highway project to serve as an alternative route to the Federal 57 highway. Connecting the Arco Norte with San Juan del Río, Querétaro, the project will pass through Hidalgo and is expected to reduce travel times by up to 60 minutes. The construction is scheduled to begin in November 2026 and is projected to conclude in April 2030, with an estimated investment of 26.862 billion pesos.

In the interim, current maintenance work on the Mexico-Querétaro highway is causing significant traffic congestion. Maintenance between kilometers 139 and 140 has resulted in slow-moving traffic and delays for both private vehicles and Qrobús public transport, with some routes experiencing delays of 40 to 50 minutes during peak hours. Caminos y Puentes Federales (Capufe) has reported that these works create a bottleneck affecting the transport of raw materials and finished goods between the industrial parks of Querétaro and the State of Mexico.

Separately, the city of Morteros, Argentina, has been named a sub-venue for the 2026 CIOFF Argentina International Folklore Festival. The event will host international delegations from Mexico and Colombia to share cultural traditions and music at Casa Graciela Boero.
