Querétaro approves Gender Identity Law for adults

The Querétaro Congress has approved the Gender Identity Law for a second time, passing the measure with 15 votes in favor and 10 against. This new version follows a veto by Governor Mauricio Kuri González, who argued that the previous iteration failed to protect the rights of children and adolescents. The revised law explicitly restricts the administrative procedure for rectifying gender identity data to adults only, prohibiting minors from using the process based on self-perception.

Under the approved law, adults can request changes to their gender identity data through the Civil Registry via an administrative process. This procedure does not require a court ruling, medical or psychological assessments, or evidence of surgical intervention, aligning Querétaro with the legal framework used in most of Mexico.

Separately, the National Action Party (PAN) has submitted a request to the National Electoral Institute (INE) regarding potential conflicts of interest. The party is asking for Counselor Carla Astrid Humphrey Jordan to recuse herself from matters related to the Querétaro gubernatorial election. This request stems from the fact that her husband, Santiago Nieto Castillo, has been publicly identified as a potential Morena candidate for the governorship. The PAN stated the request aims to ensure impartiality and transparency during the electoral process.
