Mexico-Cuernavaca Highway Closed After Trailer Dumps 10,000 Liters of Acid
On 29 July 2026 a heavy trailer overturned on the Mexico‑Cuernavaca highway near kilometre 70, spilling roughly 10,000 litres of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid together with other chemicals. The incident forced a total closure of both directions of the road.
Emergency services, including CAPUFE, Protección Civil and specialized hazardous‑materials teams, established a 300–500 metre safety perimeter, used calcium to neutralise the acid and conducted a cleanup that lasted more than nine hours. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes and officials said the highway would reopen after several hours once the cleanup was finished. No injuries were reported.
