Querétaro electoral institute rejects family violence law reform initiative
The General Council of the Electoral Institute of the State of Querétaro (IEEQ) has declared a citizen initiative to reform the local Penal Code regarding family violence as inadmissible. The proposal, submitted by a group of young people to the 61st State Legislature, failed to meet the minimum legal requirement for citizen support.
According to the IEEQ, the initiative gathered 731 valid signatures through the ‘Apoyo Ciudadano-INE’ mobile application. This falls significantly short of the 3,862 signatures required by the State's Citizen Participation Law, which mandates support from at least 0.2 percent of the state's nominal electoral list.
Electoral counselor Karla Isabel Olvera Moreno clarified that the decision was strictly legal and not a judgment on the importance or relevance of the proposal itself. The promoters had a 60-day window, from July 6 to September 3, to collect the necessary endorsements.
