Querétaro family protests to prevent reclassification of homicide charges

Family and friends of Óscar “N” have demonstrated outside the Criminal Justice Court in San Juan del Río, Querétaro, to demand justice following his death on April 27. The man died while in custody after being detained for an administrative infraction at a Civic Court.

Three state police officers have been identified as potentially responsible for the death due to alleged police abuse. The family is currently contesting a legal appeal filed by the defense of the accused officers, who are seeking to reclassify the charge from intentional homicide to simple homicide to secure a lighter sentence.

The accused officers have been removed from the State Police and are currently undergoing their legal process while remaining free. The mother of the deceased, Lidia Uribe, has called upon the President of the Querétaro State Judiciary, Braulio Guerra Urbiola, to prevent the reclassification of the crime. Legal hearings are scheduled to resume on October 1.
