Student protests disrupt UAQ and UAM universities
Multiple Mexican universities are facing significant student unrest. At the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro (UAQ), students have initiated protests and indefinite sit-ins. Demands include transparency in the budget, improvements to gender violence prevention units, better infrastructure, and clarity regarding the rector election process. Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González has expressed a willingness to support a resolution through dialogue while respecting university autonomy.
Simultaneously, the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) is experiencing strikes across all five of its academic units. Students are protesting deteriorating facilities, service deficiencies, and gender violence. They have also questioned the university's budget priorities, specifically citing the alleged purchase of eight Tesla vehicles for the General Rectorate. UAM authorities have expressed a commitment to addressing these demands through unit-specific dialogue and verifiable agreements.
In a broader context, the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES) highlighted a Supreme Court ruling that protects university autonomy against state interference, specifically regarding the Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit.
