Querétaro Governor proposes anti-crime vetting protocol for 2027 candidates
Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González has proposed a specialized protocol to prevent individuals with ties to organized crime from running for public office in the 2027 elections. The proposed '6 de 6' vetting process would expand upon existing transparency requirements to include asset, tax, and conflict of interest declarations, alongside drug testing and polygraph examinations conducted by independent agencies.
Political parties in the state have begun responding to the proposal. The PAN (National Action Party) has formally committed to applying these filters to its 2027 candidates. Movimiento Ciudadano has also expressed support, with leadership pledging to undergo the vetting process themselves. Conversely, the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) has stated it will run independently in the 2027 elections without alliances, while also proposing that anti-corruption measures should extend beyond the campaign period to include permanent oversight of sitting officials.
Senator Guadalupe Murguía noted that while Querétaro has not yet seen criminal financing in its campaigns, the risk of infiltration remains a national concern. The governor emphasized that the protocol should be a non-partisan, voluntary agreement between political parties and civil society to ensure candidates possess proven integrity.
