Querétaro-Irapuato passenger train project to transform regional mobility

The Querétaro-Irapuato passenger train project is set to transform regional mobility and urban infrastructure. The 108.2-kilometer railway will feature a double track designed for speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour, with stations planned for Querétaro, Apaseo el Grande, Celaya, Villagrán/Cortázar, Salamanca, and Irapuato.

In Irapuato, the project involves significant urban reconfiguration. The new terminal is planned for the site of the former railway station near Calzada de la Industria, affecting neighborhoods such as Barrio de Tenerías and El Ranchito. Beyond passenger service, the project includes the construction of auxiliary buildings, refueling zones, workshops, garages, and a maintenance base, as well as the rectification of existing track layouts.

Local business leaders from Coparmex Irapuato-Salamanca have expressed support for the initiative, viewing it as a potential economic catalyst. Fernando González, president of the organization, noted that the project could improve regional competitiveness, attract new investments, and boost business tourism. However, he emphasized the need for careful planning regarding urban integration, access points, and potential traffic impacts to ensure the project aligns with the city's growth.
