Querétaro Judiciary expands use of SonIA artificial intelligence system

The Judiciary of Querétaro is expanding the use of 'SonIA', an artificial intelligence system designed to assist in the drafting of judicial resolutions. Currently implemented in the Sixth Family and Ninth Civil courts, the technology is expected to be rolled out to additional jurisdictional areas throughout the remainder of 2026.

Braulio Guerra Urbiola, president of the Superior Court of Justice, emphasized that the tool is intended to manage increasing workloads, noting that litigation in the state grows by approximately 10 percent annually while the judicial payroll increases by only 2 percent. He clarified that SonIA organizes and classifies information to generate documents, but these must be reviewed, read, and reflected upon by a judge. To ensure transparency, resolutions assisted by the system include a disclaimer stating that the document was reviewed by the presiding judge.

The technological model has drawn interest from various Mexican states, including Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Puebla, Jalisco, and Baja California, as judicial authorities seek to adopt similar practices to improve the efficiency and standardization of justice delivery across the country.
