Querétaro municipal budget scrutiny over payroll and public works

Armando Rivera Castillejos, the municipal coordinator for Movimiento Ciudadano, has raised concerns regarding the budget priorities of the Querétaro municipality. According to figures presented by Rivera, the municipality has allocated 2,263 million pesos to payroll for 2026, compared to 1,514 million pesos for public works. This creates a gap of approximately 750 million pesos favoring administrative costs over infrastructure.

Rivera attributed the high payroll costs to a 70% increase in the number of municipal secretariats. He noted that the daily payroll expenditure amounts to approximately 6.2 million pesos, a sum he suggested could instead fund 563,000 regular Qrobús public transport fares. Additionally, he claimed that the budget for public works has seen a reduction of 1,165 million pesos compared to previous administrations. Rivera called on citizens to demand greater clarity regarding the distribution of public resources.
