Querétaro political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections
Political maneuvering in Querétaro is intensifying ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly within the Morena and PAN parties. In San Juan del Río, preliminary electoral preferences suggest a potential advantage for Morena over the PAN, though previous municipal elections saw a narrow victory for the PAN. Internal tensions are rising within the PAN as factions debate the leadership of Luis Nava and Felifer Macías, while potential candidates like Tania Ruiz, Liliana San Martín, and Bibiana Rodríguez are being discussed.
Within the Morena party, the appointment of Santiago Nieto Castillo as the state coordinator for the Defense of the Transformation and National Sovereignty has sparked internal debate. While the national leadership presented the appointment as a result of an internal process, Senator Beatriz Robles noted that the specific results of the internal measurements—which included Gilberto Herrera and herself—were not made public. Although formal pre-campaigns for the governorship do not begin until January 2027, the new coordination role is viewed as a significant political platform for future candidates.
