Mexico commemorates Physician's Day amid healthcare challenges

Mexico observed Physician's Day on October 23, marked by both institutional recognition and calls for structural reform. Various state and municipal governments, including those in Chihuahua, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and the State of Mexico, issued statements honoring the vocation and commitment of medical professionals in both urban and rural settings.

However, the celebration highlighted significant systemic issues. Data indicates that while there are approximately 357,000 physicians in the country, there is a notable deficit of specialists in the public sector. Furthermore, the profession faces challenges such as shortages of medical supplies, the need for better infrastructure, and demands for increased salaries.

In Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, the day took a somber tone as health workers marched to demand justice for Dr. Cristina Ramos Argüello, who was recently victims of a feminicide. Protesters called for the immediate capture of the alleged perpetrator, Lenin Salvador “N”, to ensure the crime does not go unpunished.
