Querétaro reports seven cases of human myiasis in 2026

The Querétaro State Health Secretariat has confirmed a new case of human myiasis caused by the screw-worm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in a 69-year-old woman residing in the municipality of Querétaro. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the state to seven during 2026.

The confirmed cases are distributed across several municipalities: three in Querétaro, two in Cadereyta de Montes, one in Amealco de Bonfil, and one in San Juan del Río. Authorities also reported one death associated with the disease in the municipality of Querétaro.

In response, health officials have activated epidemiological surveillance and sanitary response protocols. These measures include continuous monitoring of probable cases, timely notification, and epidemiological investigation across all medical units in the state to prevent further spread. The disease occurs when larvae from the fly develop in open wounds or mucous membranes, feeding on living tissue.
