Querétaro water commission introduces digital billing and new debt policies

The State Water Commission (CEA) in Querétaro, Mexico, has implemented new measures regarding water services and billing. Under a new initiative titled “Libre de papel: migra tu recibo y adopta un árbol,” users who switch from printed to digital water bills will trigger the planting of a native tree in public spaces. This program, a collaboration between the CEA, the municipal government, and the Querétaro Trust for Environmental Conservation (FIQMA), aims to plant 5,000 trees and reduce water consumption used in the printing process by an estimated 10 million liters annually.

Simultaneously, the CEA has introduced stricter requirements to address rising debt. A new regulation requires users to present a certificate of no debt, either physical or electronic, to perform various services. This includes the reconnection of water and drainage lines, as well as procedures for real estate developments, self-sufficiency certificates, and feasibility requests. The measure follows an increase in service contracts with outstanding debts exceeding 13 months.
