Quickmart expands from Nakuru kiosk to national Kenyan retail chain

Quickmart has evolved from a small family-run kiosk in Nakuru into one of Kenya’s largest supermarket chains, currently operating 72 stores across 16 counties. The business was established in 2006 by the late John Kinuthia and his wife, Zipporah, following their previous ventures in farming, hospitality, and butchery.

The retailer expanded into the Nairobi market in 2010, a move driven by the founders' son, Duncan Kinuthia, who later became the managing director. Following John Kinuthia’s death in 2016, the family maintained control of the business.

A significant structural shift occurred in 2019 when the Mauritius-based private equity firm Adenia Partners acquired a stake in the company. In 2020, Quickmart was combined with Tumaini Self-Service, which had also received investment from Adenia, consolidating the two entities under the Quickmart brand.
