Quilombo da Fazenda receives official state recognition in São Paulo

The State of São Paulo has officially recognized the Quilombo da Fazenda community as a quilombola remnant. This decision, approved by the Fundação Instituto de Terras do Estado de São Paulo (Itesp), was published in the State Official Gazette.

The recognition follows a conciliation process overseen by the Tribunal Regional Federal da 3ª Região (TRF3). An agreement ratified by the TRF3 in December 2023 established measures for land regularization and collective ownership for the community.

The recognized territory covers approximately 970.8 hectares within the Picinguaba Core of the Serra do Mar State Park. To balance environmental preservation with territorial rights, the plan proposes converting densely populated areas of Sertão da Fazenda and Ponta Baixa into a Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS). Other areas, such as Praia da Fazenda and Sertão do Cubatão, will remain part of the State Park. The agreement also guarantees the permanence of existing quilombola homes and mandates a traditional use plan for the remaining conservation areas.
