Claudia Sheinbaum rolls out sargazo cleanup and tourism revamp in Quintana Roo

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a comprehensive plan to combat the surge of sargazo on Quintana Roo’s Caribbean beaches. The strategy adds new "sargacero" vessels, expands offshore barriers and will process harvested algae into bio‑fertilizers, energy and construction materials, aiming to collect up to 6,000 tonnes a day before it reaches the shore.

In the same tour she unveiled “Plan Tulum Renace”, a tourism‑boost package that makes the Parque del Jaguar free for Mexican visitors, restores beach access at no cost, and reduces entry fees for the Zona Arqueológica and Área Natural Protegida to 80 pesos for nationals (free on Sundays) and 265 pesos for foreigners. The plan adds electric transport inside the park, an arched entrance, an ecological parking lot and ten other infrastructure and service upgrades. She met with hotel operators, supervised the sargacero ship Natans in Puerto Morelos, and adjusted her schedule to attend the World Cup final in New York. The initiatives are part of the broader government agenda that also includes a housing program delivering property titles to families in Playa del Carmen.
