Global tourism sector projected to reach $12 trillion by 2026

The global tourism sector is projected to reach a $12 trillion contribution to the world economy by 2026, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. This represents a 3.2% growth rate, outpacing general global economic expansion.

In the Dominican Republic, UN Tourism reports double-digit growth, with international visitor arrivals exceeding initial projections due to effective promotion and hotel diversification. Similarly, Bolivia saw a 15.5% increase in foreign visitors in 2025, generating $818.6 million in revenue.

In Mexico, several regional developments are underway. Querétaro reported a tourism revenue of 141 billion pesos over the last five years. Meanwhile, the extension of an import tariff decree until 2030 for northern and southern border regions aims to provide business certainty. However, the tourism sector in Quintana Roo is monitoring a proposal to increase the Non-Resident Fee (DNR) by 35.8%, a move that business leaders warn could harm regional competitiveness.
