Quintana Roo expands sargassum barrier network to protect tourism
Municipal authorities in Playa del Carmen have installed five kilometres of anti‑sargassum barriers along the central coastline, covering the stretch from Playa Fundadores to Punta Esmeralda. The project was led by municipal president Estefanía Mercado and carried out with the support of the Secretaría de Marina and the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre.
The federal government, under President Claudia Sheinbaum, has launched a nationwide sargassum‑containment programme for the Caribbean Mexican coast, allocating more than two billion pesos. The plan funds new specialised vessels, the deployment of dozens of kilometres of floating barriers, and the conversion of collected algae into biogas, fertilisers and construction materials. Key tourist destinations targeted include Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos and Mahahual.
In Puerto Morelos, authorities report clean sand and clear water, attributing the favourable conditions to the barriers and low‑wave zones that allow early interception of the macro‑algae. Experts, however, note that barrier performance in Playa del Carmen is limited by constant ferry traffic and strong currents, which can allow sargassum to bypass the installations. The coordinated effort was overseen in a joint meeting of President Sheinbaum, Governor Mara Lezama and municipal president Estefanía Mercado, highlighting the multi‑level government response to protect the region’s tourism and environment.
