Quintana Roo electoral institute sets 2027 election start date

The Electoral Institute of Quintana Roo (Ieqroo) has scheduled the official start of the 2027 local electoral process for January 8, 2027. The General Council approved the timeline and is working on guidelines for affirmative actions and gender parity.

One specific proposal under consideration is an affirmative action measure that would require political parties to nominate exclusively female candidates for the municipal presidency of Bacalar. This measure aims to address a historical lack of representation, as Bacalar is the only municipality in the state that has never been governed by a woman. A final decision on this and other parity rules is expected before September 15.

Additionally, Ieqroo has ratified its Technical Unit for Informatics and Statistics to manage the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP). The institute is also implementing the ‘Conóceles’ system, which allows citizens to consult candidate data, and will soon announce a call for electoral counselors for its 19 decentralized bodies.
