Quintana Roo expects record cruise arrivals by 2026
Quintana Roo anticipates record-breaking cruise ship arrivals and passenger numbers by 2026. Bernardo Cueto Riestra, head of the State Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), reported that interest from various shipping companies to expand operations in the state's ports is driving these positive projections.
Mahahual, located in the Great Costa Maya, is a key area for this growth. Sedetur expects an increase in Royal Caribbean dockings by 2027, which is intended to bolster the economy in southern Quintana Roo.
However, the region is currently navigating infrastructure transitions. Ongoing works in the Costa Maya area to modernize port facilities have led to a temporary reduction in cruise stops, impacting local businesses such as shops and restaurants. While Carnival had planned to begin pier rehabilitation in Mahahual during the current season, the works have not yet materialized. In response to these fluctuations, local operators are diversifying their offerings through snorkeling, eco-boat excursions, and cultural festivals to attract independent travelers.
