Quintana Roo identifies 780 irregular settlements
The Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (Sedetus) has identified 780 irregular human settlements across the 11 municipalities of Quintana Roo. The highest concentration is found in the northern region, with Benito Juárez recording 282 settlements and Isla Mujeres recording 182. Together, these two municipalities account for nearly 60% of the state's irregular occupations.
To address this issue, the Committee for the Regularization of Human Settlements was created in June to coordinate institutional actions and prevent new unauthorized occupations. As part of the strategy, Sedetus plans to establish a State Observatory of Human Settlements in collaboration with the Universidad del Caribe to generate risk maps, technical files, and diagnostic data.
Proposed regularization methods include the concerted expropriation of common-use ejido lands to facilitate legal property titles for residents. Officials noted that the process requires significant time and cooperation from all involved parties to provide legal certainty to affected families.
