Quintana Roo rises in competitiveness index despite dip in governor approval

Quintana Roo has seen significant shifts in both economic competitiveness and political approval ratings. According to the 2026 State Competitiveness Index (ICE) by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), the state climbed 12 positions to reach ninth place nationally. This advancement is attributed to improvements in mobility, health, and economic opportunities, supported by infrastructure projects such as the Puente Nichupté in Cancún and various hospital expansions.

In contrast, recent political polling from Mitofsky shows a decline in public approval for Governor Mara Lezama. In August 2026, her approval rating dropped to 60.5%, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points from July, causing her to fall four positions in the national ranking of governors. Despite this decline, she remains among the top ten most approved leaders in Mexico and continues to lead the Southern Peninsula region. Meanwhile, Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena saw a slight increase in approval, moving up one position in the national rankings.
