Quintana Roo sees Canadian tourism surge amid WestJet strike

Canadian travelers are becoming a key source of visitors to Mexico's Quintana Roo, with airlines adding direct flights from cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa. The increased connectivity has lengthened average stays, raised per‑traveller spending and provided a notable boost to the region’s tourism‑related economy.

In early summer a labour dispute at Canadian carrier WestJet triggered a strike that cancelled 12 flights between Cancun and several Canadian destinations. The disruption left dozens of passengers stranded at Cancun International Airport, forced many to incur extra accommodation and re‑booking costs, and prompted the airline to negotiate a preliminary settlement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

Tourism officials, including Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra, noted that the market’s growth remains important even as the strike highlighted the sector’s vulnerability to labour actions.
