Quintana Roo sees rise in gastrointestinal diseases due to heat

High temperatures in Quintana Roo are driving an increase in gastrointestinal diseases due to accelerated food decomposition and microbial growth. According to data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, the region recorded 33,253 cases of infectious intestinal diseases through May, representing a 16.1% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

In Cancun, municipal health officials report that approximately 90% of treated gastrointestinal cases are viral, primarily manifesting as diarrhea lasting three to seven days. Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution with perishable items such as fish, seafood, dairy, and prepared foods, noting that even seemingly normal-looking food can become a health risk if left out of refrigeration for several hours.
