Quintana Roo tourism expects rebound with new flights as officials dismiss crisis
Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra said the recent dip in visitor numbers to Tulum is seasonal and not a crisis, emphasizing that the destination remains a flagship Caribbean spot and that promotion efforts will continue to improve the visitor experience.
The state added eight new Mexicana de Aviación flights to Tulum for July and August as part of a summer‑season strategy, alongside a national promotional campaign aimed at the Mexico City metropolitan area. The campaign uses the Vacation Specials platform with more than 200 participating hotels, and Governor Mara Lezama will meet with over 300 travel agents in August to boost bookings.
Cueto also noted that about one‑third of hotel rooms are expected to stay vacant, projecting around 66% occupancy, inbound tourism of roughly 3.4 million visitors for the July‑August period, and an economic impact exceeding US$3 billion. He highlighted ongoing work to strengthen air connectivity and diversify the tourism offer beyond sun‑and‑sand attractions.
