Mexico City and Quintana Roo deepen tourism ties with new Aeroméxico stop‑over and extra flights
The tourism secretariats of Mexico City and Quintana Roo signed a partnership with Aeroméxico to launch a stop‑over programme, allowing international visitors from the United States, Canada, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil to spend time in the capital before continuing free of charge to destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. Mexicana de Aviación will increase frequencies to Tulum and Chetumal throughout July and August, adding eight extra flights to support the summer vacation season.
Cancún officials project hotel occupancy of 81‑89 % for the summer, expecting 513‑545 daily aircraft movements at the international airport. Weekend traffic at the airport rose to 501 flights, with both domestic and international services. Hotel operators in Cozumel report occupancy below 50 % but anticipate a rebound as travel demand picks up. Tulum’s tourism board announced a promotional campaign involving more than 85 local businesses and nationwide travel agencies to attract domestic visitors.
Analysts note that Mexicana de Aviación’s expansion must become financially sustainable, as the airline currently costs the government around 3 billion pesos annually. Increased connectivity is expected to stimulate regional economies and reduce reliance on public subsidies.
