Quintana Roo tourism sees visitor increase and strategic shift toward business events

Quintana Roo is experiencing significant shifts in its tourism landscape. During the last week of July, the Mexican Caribbean welcomed 455,918 visitors, an increase of over 6,000 compared to the previous week. This growth raised the state's average hotel occupancy from 67.0% to 67.9%.

Hotel occupancy rates varied by destination. Costa Mujeres led with 74.2%, followed closely by Cancún at 73.5%. Other high-performing areas included Holbox (70.5%) and Isla Mujeres (68.7%), while southern destinations like Tulum (53.1%) and Costa Maya (46.8%) reported lower figures.

In response to challenges such as sargassum and security concerns, state officials are pivoting toward the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) segment. Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra recently participated in IBTM Americas to promote the region's infrastructure, which includes over 140,000 hotel rooms, three convention centers, and 12 Tren Maya stations, aiming to attract high-spending business travelers.
