Quintet Mechanism rejects parallel governance in Sudan

The international Quintet Mechanism has concluded a three-day mission to Khartoum, issuing a final statement that categorically rejects the establishment of parallel governance structures in Sudan. The group, which includes the United Nations, African Union, European Union, Arab League, and IGAD, emphasized that there is no military solution to the ongoing conflict.

During the visit, the delegation held constructive discussions with several Sudanese officials, including Transitional Sovereignty Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Kamil Idris, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Moawia Osman Khalid. The mechanism expressed its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while advocating for a credible, inclusive political process led by Sudanese citizens to facilitate a transition toward a civilian democratic government.

The mission aimed to align international efforts with local Sudanese initiatives. The Quintet highlighted that a sustainable political process must be accompanied by concrete steps on the ground to protect civilians and cease hostilities. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has been ongoing since April 2023, resulting in one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, characterized by famine and mass displacement.
