Quito airport seizure: Protected Galápagos marine iguanas intercepted
Authorities at Quito's Mariscal Sucre International Airport apprehended a foreign national, identified as Olga K., for attempting to smuggle protected marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) out of Ecuador. The reptiles, which are endemic to the Galápagos Islands, were discovered hidden within the suspect's luggage.
Reports indicate the iguanas were intended for transport to Iceland. Upon discovery, the animals were found to be in a state of weakness and dehydration. They have since been transferred to an authorized conservation center in the Pichincha province for specialized veterinary care.
The marine iguana is a highly protected species, listed under Appendix I of CITES, which prohibits international commercial trade due to the threat of extinction. Ecuadorian judicial authorities have ordered pre-trial detention for the suspect as the investigation into the illegal trafficking attempt continues.
