Quito sees multiple violent incidents including decapitated body and armed attack
On 29 July 2026 authorities in Quito discovered a decapitated, packaged human body hanging from a bridge on Avenida Simón Bolívar in the Llano Chico district; the victim’s head was found about 200 metres away on the roadway. Police have not released the victim’s identity and have closed lanes of Simón Bolívar Avenue and De los Nogales street, causing traffic congestion and temporary road closures.
Later the same day an armed attack in the Necochea sector near the Panecillo in central Quito left one man dead and another wounded; the victims were taken to Hospital Enrique Garcés, where one died en route. Police are investigating both incidents, with the bridge homicide suspected to be tied to a dispute between organized‑crime groups.
Both events prompted police, ambulance and fire‑fighter deployments, road closures, and heightened security measures across the city.
