Quito approves urban transport fare increase to $0.40

The Quito Metropolitan Council approved an ordinance to increase urban public transport fares from $0.35 to $0.40, effective January 1, 2027. The measure passed with 14 votes in favor and six against.

To prevent an immediate impact on users, the Municipality will provide approximately $23 million in economic compensation to transport operators through December 31, 2026. This subsidy aims to cover rising costs, such as the removal of diesel subsidies, while keeping current rates frozen. Operators can receive up to $8,000 per unit across the city's 2,913 buses.

The fare increase is conditional upon operators meeting specific service and technology standards. Requirements include implementing real-time tracking, passenger information systems, and an integrated collection system (SIR). Additionally, operators must be up to date with municipal tax obligations and present notarized monthly reports to prove service delivery. For electric or low-emission vehicles that meet technical criteria, the fare may rise to $0.45.

The decision has faced criticism from opposition council members and citizen representatives, who argue the increase lacks sufficient service quality guarantees and places a financial burden on residents, particularly those in peripheral areas.
