Quito implements ecological recovery of Machángara River

The Municipality of Quito has planted more than 2,900 native trees and plants in the Machángara River micro-basin as part of an ecological recovery initiative. Between 2025 and October 21, 2026, authorities conducted 82 interventions aimed at conserving the city's water systems.

Key actions included cleaning 27,900 meters of river and ravine edges and treating 398,500 square meters of slopes. Additionally, 7,500 meters of protective fencing were installed. Of the total vegetation planted, 1,500 species belong to the Pichincha-Atacazo Special Natural Intervention and Recovery Area (AIER).

Santiago Sandoval, Quito's Secretary of Environment, stated that these efforts focus on the maintenance and recovery of natural spaces within the micro-basin. The project involves approximately 3,100 participants. Parallel to these short-term actions, the municipality is advancing the Special Complementary Urban Plan (PUCE) for the integral recovery of the river, which has already completed its territorial and environmental diagnosis.
