Quito issues 100 sanctions for illegal open-air burning

The Municipality of Quito has initiated 100 administrative sanction proceedings against citizens for engaging in prohibited open-air burning between June 1 and August 2, 2026. This measure aims to mitigate risks to public safety, local ecosystems, and air quality.

The highest concentration of these infractions occurred in three sectors: Tumbaco (24 cases), La Delicia (22 cases), and Los Chillos (21 cases), collectively accounting for 67% of the total sanctions. Other affected areas include Eloy Alfaro, Eugenio Espejo, Calderón, Manuela Sáenz, and Chocó Andino.

Authorities warned that open-air burning significantly increases the risk of forest fires, especially during the dry season. Violators face fines starting at 50% of a unified basic salary ($241), with more severe infractions resulting in higher administrative penalties ranging from 1 to 2.5 basic salaries.
