Quito police operations in Calderón spark security results and political tension

Security operations in the Calderón district of Quito have resulted in conflicting reports regarding police conduct and public safety. Under the 'Plan Protección Quito,' the National Police of Ecuador conducted large-scale interventions in the Calderón, Quitumbe, and Eloy Alfaro districts. Led by Interior Minister John Reimberg and Police Commander General Pablo Vinicio Dávila, these operations included vehicle and person controls, migratory verifications, and commercial inspections. The police reported seizing 70 kilograms of marijuana, 85 grams of cocaine, several firearms, and various weapons, while also apprehending 11 individuals and detaining four others for judicial requirements.

Simultaneously, political tension arose in Calderón during a laughter therapy event organized by Quito mayoral candidate Jorge Yunda. Candidates Alejandro Jaramillo and Yunda alleged that police and local authorities attempted to arrest them and others without providing a clear justification. Jaramillo claimed the organizers held valid permits for the venue, which operates as a shopping center. Yunda criticized the intervention, arguing that authorities were focusing on a private activity rather than addressing broader insecurity in the capital. Despite the confrontation, the event proceeded.
