Quito protesters oppose sale of IESS real estate assets

Retirees, workers, and social organizations held a protest in Quito on September 7, 2026, to oppose a government proposal to sell real estate assets belonging to the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS).

President Daniel Noboa announced that the government is analyzing the sale of approximately USD 2 billion in real estate assets, including land and buildings, which are considered idle. The goal is to generate liquidity to address the institution's financial needs.

Protesters argued that these assets constitute the heritage of the affiliates and demanded respect for the autonomy of the IESS. Representatives from the Commission in Defense of Social Security warned that reducing assets could impair the system's ability to fund benefits. Demonstrators also highlighted ongoing issues such as shortages of medication and difficulties in accessing medical care.
