QuiX Quantum launches Carina, first commercial photonic quantum computer
Dutch startup QuiX Quantum introduced Carina, the first commercially available photonic quantum computer, as part of its universal Dedalo architecture. CEO Stefan Hengesbach said the system combines high‑performance, error‑corrected photonic qubits with a design that can be installed in traditional HPC data centres, positioning quantum processing units alongside CPUs and GPUs.
Separately, researchers at the University of Warwick and Canada’s National Research Council announced a chip architecture called Quantum Phononic Links. By using acoustic vibrations (phonons) to carry quantum information across a semiconductor lattice, the technology overcomes the current limitation that qubits must be adjacent, offering a potential pathway to scale quantum processors to millions of qubits.
Both developments aim to move quantum computing from cloud‑only access toward on‑site deployment, addressing key hurdles in scalability and integration with existing classical computing infrastructure.
