Quang Tri authorities respond to dangerous sinkholes
Two significant sinkholes have appeared in Quang Tri province, Vietnam, posing risks to residents and local infrastructure. The first incident occurred on September 22 near the An My - Ban Chua inter-communal road in Hieu Giang commune, following a loud explosion. This sinkhole has reached a depth of 17.6 meters and is located approximately 5 meters from residential houses.
A second sinkhole appeared on September 24 at the Ngan Thuy Ethnic Minority Boarding Primary and Secondary School in Kim Ngan commune. This hole is estimated to be between 3 and 4 meters deep and 1 meter wide, damaging part of the school's sports field.
Local authorities have implemented safety measures, including installing warning signs, erecting fences, and restricting movement in the affected areas. Quang Tri Vice Chairman Le Van Bao inspected the sites and directed officials to monitor geological developments closely. Proposed solutions include pumping sand into the holes and conducting exploratory drilling to determine the exact cause, which experts suggest may be related to karst topography and underground water flows.
