R. C. Slocum statue unveiled at Texas A&M's Kyle Field

Texas A&M University has unveiled a 10-foot bronze statue of Hall of Fame head football coach R. C. Slocum at the North end of Kyle Field. The ceremony, held on Friday, September 4, 2026, was attended by hundreds of family members, friends, former players, and students.

Slocum, the winningest head coach in Texas A&M history, led the program from 1989 to 2002. During his tenure, he earned 123 victories, four conference titles, and the 1998 Big 12 Championship. He is also credited with the widespread adoption of the “Wrecking Crew” moniker to describe the team's defensive line.

Head coach Mike Elko described the statue as an “unbelievable accomplishment” for a figure who epitomizes elite coaching at the university. In his remarks during the unveiling, Slocum expressed gratitude to the coaches and players who contributed to his success, stating, “I had great coaches and I had great players.”
