R U OK? Day promotes mental health awareness and connection

R U OK? Day, founded in 2009 by Gavin Larkin, serves as an annual reminder to foster connection through genuine conversation to support mental wellbeing. The 2026 observance falls on Thursday, September 10.

In Australia, mental health challenges have significant economic implications. The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Aging estimates the cost of mental ill-health to the national economy at up to $220 billion annually, while poor mental health is estimated to cost businesses up to $39 billion per year due to lost productivity.

Organizations such as the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) integrate these principles into community sports, utilizing initiatives like the Player Assistance Program and Tackle Your Feelings workshops. While many people hesitate to initiate conversations due to fears of awkwardness or saying the wrong thing, research indicates that nine in 10 people feel cared for and grateful when someone checks in on them.
