R U OK? Day study shows measurable improvements in mental wellbeing

A new study examining nine years of Australian data suggests that the annual R U OK? Day mental health campaign leads to a small but measurable improvement in mental wellbeing. The most significant gains were observed among men aged 25 to 49. However, the research noted that the campaign did not result in an increase in GP visits for mental health treatment plans or a rise in prescriptions for psychiatric medicines, highlighting both the effectiveness and the limitations of public awareness initiatives.

In response to the annual initiative, local organizations such as the Bundaberg Regional Council are hosting community events to encourage social connection. Activities in areas including Bundaberg, Childers, and Gin Gin include wellbeing workshops, support service access, and social gatherings designed to facilitate conversations about mental health and provide resources for those struggling.
