R Veeramani POCSO case: Multiple survivors identified

Police investigations into the POCSO case against Gem Group founder R Veeramani have led to the identification of multiple survivors. Authorities report that several victims were minors at the time of the alleged sexual assaults, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Following the identification of a survivor from a Scheduled Caste community, law enforcement has added charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The investigation has revealed that the alleged abuse occurred at various locations, including Veeramani’s residence, his office, and a guest house on the outskirts of Chennai.

A Special Court recently refused a police closure report, forcing the reopening of the case after investigators previously claimed the survivor’s identity could not be confirmed. Veeramani, who is over 80 years old, has been granted three days of police custody to be conducted within the prison complex due to his age and health. Two associates, Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan, were previously arrested on charges related to destroying evidence and failing to report the crime.
