Rabbi David Naccache attacked in Nanterre supermarket, probe launched

Rabbi David Naccache, head of the Jewish community centre in Nanterre, was verbally assaulted in a Lidl supermarket on 26 July. A customer shouted insults such as “dirty Jew” and told him to “go back to Israel”. The rabbi filed a complaint and the Nanterre public prosecutor opened an investigation for public insult motivated by religion.

Mayor Raphaël Adam expressed support for the rabbi and the local Jewish community, while the opposition municipal group Nanterre Ensemble publicised the incident. The case occurs amid a rise in antisemitic incidents in France since the October 2023 Hamas attacks, with reported offences increasing sharply over recent years. The French government has responded with a proposed “republican cohesion” law to toughen penalties for hate crimes and impose new obligations on digital platforms, alongside a broader plan of anti‑racism measures championed by minister Aurore Bergé.
