Rabbi Dov Lior permits settlers to harvest Palestinian olives

Rabbi Dov Lior, a prominent figure in the religious Zionist movement, has issued a religious ruling permitting Israeli settlers to harvest olives from Palestinian-owned lands in the West Bank. Lior justifies the decision by claiming that the land belongs to the Jewish people because Palestinians never purchased it from Jewish owners. He further argued that if Palestinians are unable to access their groves due to security restrictions, they are presumed to have abandoned the crops.

The ruling characterizes the act of harvesting as a fulfillment of the ‘commandment of occupying the land’. This decision has faced significant opposition from other religious groups. The Tsohar rabbinical organization issued a counter-ruling, stating that seizing crops from others is religiously forbidden, regardless of whether the owners are Jewish or non-Jewish.

The fatwa comes amid a reported surge in settler violence during the olive harvest season. The Wall and Settlement Protection Committee has documented 136 settler attacks since the beginning of October. These incidents include physical assaults on farmers, the destruction of vehicles, and the theft of crops and agricultural equipment.
